Participants receive up to $1,575

UAB researchers need adult volunteers
in the Birmingham area who have ever injected drugs and have recently used non-prescription opioids or stimulants.

This study will test the effect of a commonly prescribed medication on inflammation and immune response.

Why Participate?

  • Receive up to $1,575
    • $1,125 for time and effort
    • $450 for participation in optional procedures
  • Receive valuable health information
  • Information learned from this study may help individuals with substance use

What is involved?

  • In-person screening visit
  • 9 in-person study visits and 14 virtual visits over 6 months
  • Take one pill a day, receive routine vaccinations, and undergo basic health tests
  • Questionnaires
  • Optional fluid and biopsy sampling
All study visits will take place at the Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 3220 5th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35222.

Eligibility

Candidates may be eligible to participate if they:

  • Have a history of drug use
  • Are 19 to 64 years of age
  • Live in the Birmingham area
  • Do or do not have HIV
